Ingredients
Ice cubes
40ml Vodka
20ml Coffee Liqueur (such as Kahlua)
20ml Fresh Espresso (chilled)
3 Whole Coffee Beans (we recommend Mull'd Disco Beans!)
Method
Fill cocktail shaker with ice cubes
Add all ingredients
Shake and strain into a martini/coupe glass
Garnish with coffee beans (or our Disco Beans)
Tips
If you do not have an espresso machine, you can easily use instant coffee or filter coffee! For instant coffee - use two teaspoons of instant coffee and dissolve with 20 ml of water.
If you use instant or filter coffee, you won't get the nice foamy layer on top. To combat this, you may use a cold egg white - simply add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker and dry shake (NO ice) for 20 seconds until foamy and then add the ice and shake again until cold. Strain into martini glass and serve.
If you prefer a version without egg white, you may use Aquafaba. Those that have used Aquafaba before will be aware of its magical powers... If you haven't - well, it's true that you learn something new every day! Aquafaba is, quite simply, chickpea juice. It is the liquid that comes in canned chickpeas and other legumes. All you need to do is add 20ml to the cocktail shaker in place of egg white and follow the steps above (dry shake first).
Trivia
Legend has it that the Espresso Martini was invented by London bartender Dick Bradsel when a supermodel walked up to the bar and asked for "something to wake me up and then f*** me up"
It was originally called the Vodka Espresso until the name Espresso Martini became popular in the late 90s. It also was known for a short stint around the early 2000s as the Pharmaceutical Stimulant.
